Memorial Day in the US is around the corner. Is there anything in particular you normally look forward to doing?

It may sound a bit corny to some, but I usually watch a couple classic WW2 movies over the weekend. Something like Midway or Pearl Harbor (the original, not the romantic remake) or one of John Wayne's.
Guess it started back when there weren't many TV stations and a couple channels would show movies all weekend. My Grandfather served in the 100th Inf Division which helped liberate Europe and I've been to a couple of his reunions with him, so we grew up with a healthy respect.
Just my way of observing I suppose.
Oh yeah... will have some friends over to cookout too. mmmmmm home-made ice cream

John Wyane....Yeah the Duke.....He hated western movies, all he wanted to do was war movies. But the western movie sold alot of tickets and made rich, so he kept doing them...Thats todays fun fact.
I dig alot of those old war movies, I can't recall the name of the one were the ship went down and everyone was floating in the water and sharks started to eat them while they slept. then one of their buddies to try to wake them up and they would just fall over with half a body left. poor guys, it a true story too.
My Grand Father, went across europe and free the jews on abunch of trains and a camp or two. He never wanted to talk about it nor would he never ride a train again. My Other Grandfather was over in the raising sun area. His group took over a couple of bases and islands. He was the guy to got to rip down the japanese flag and put up old Glory. he kept the flag to this day.

I don't remember the movie name, but it sounds like it was the story about the USS Indianapolis. The battleship which was sunk on it's return trip home after delivering the first atomic bombs to the island airbase.
Yeah, my grandfather never talked about combat or anything like that. Mainly about some of the cities he visited after VE-day. He was a medic. His unit was involved with liberating a French city named Bitche.... so they're all called "Sons of Bitche".
Very cool about getting to raise the Stars & Stripes.

You guys ever seen "Where Eagles Dare"? Ok, it's fictional but it is without a doubt my favourite WWII movie. Well worth a look. Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton!

I have one grandfather that was in the Battle of the Bulge and one that was in the North African campaign on a tank destroyer.
Those are good movies, I also like "A Bridge Too Far".
